Job Description :

Non-profit, community-based health education, advocacy and policy organization is seeking a new Controller. The mission is to collectively build equitable systems. We have been at the forefront of systems change work to eliminate disparities in health and well-being. Our policy areas include Health Systems, Food Justice, and Community and Economic Resiliency. Each area represents a unique opportunity to engage members of impacted communities in program and policy development through a wide variety of community interventions and strategies as well as representation and leadership through the coalitions and collaborations convened. With a primary focus on South Los Angeles, we work at the local, state, and national level to improve the health of under-served and marginalized communities.

Summary Description

The Controller is responsible for ensuring that the company has the proper operational controls, administrative and reporting procedures, and people systems in place to effectively grow the organization and to ensure financial strength and operating efficiency. The Controller is responsible for day-to-day general accounting duties of the organization as well as compliance with all relevant local, state, federal regulations and accounting principles; and ensures the integrity of the financial policies, procedures, systems and reporting. The Controller is responsible for supporting the executive team with key financial information and operational analytics and driving a culture of accountability in managing the business and adding value to the operations of the organization.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Responsible for all core accounting functions including, but not limited to, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger control, cost accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting.

· Ensure the organization has the proper operational controls, administrative and reporting procedures to meet existing and future operational/financial targets and to be in compliance with all applicable laws and policies.

· Working with the CFO and other financial consultants to prepare short-term and long-range plans and budgets to inform strategic revenue goals.

· Work with the CFO on the annual budget process and audit to ensure they are completed in a timely and efficient manner.

· Provide cashflow forecasting to management so that funding requirements are well understood.

· Provide timely, accurate and insightful financial and operational reporting that will inform management and the Board of Directors on the performance of the organization and provide them with the backup to make better decisions about formulating and executing business strategy.

· Effectively work with external partner to ensure that financial issues are addressed, and relationships maintained.

· Participate/assist in future project(s) development, planning & profitability assessments to help grow a self-sustaining organization.

· Regular and predictable attendance is required.

· Employee may be assigned additional or alternate duties as organizational needs require.

· Supervisory responsibilities that include: Planning, assigning, supporting and directing work; delivering performance reviews and disciplinary action; hiring and firing decisions; providing employee training and coaching; approving schedule/timecard/time off requests; and ensuring compliance to organizational policies and applicable laws; for the following positions:

o Two Staff Accountants

o Senior Financial Analyst


Required Qualifications :

 The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required typically required.

· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field, and

· CPA/CMA, and

· Five years of experience in non-profit and/or social enterprise, or equivalent combination of education and experience.

· Professional demeanor, able to function independently and within a team.

· Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, including Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint is required. Knowledge in Asana and Salesforce is a plus

· Must be highly competent and skilled in the use of QuickBooks.

· Systems implementation experience a plus as is experience with Sage Intacct

· Knowledge of government and private foundation funding.

· Experience with Federal Grant and Contracting requirements. In addition, experience with the requirements of Single Audits

· Ability to work independently, exercise mature professional judgment, and use discretion

· Provide mentorship and leadership for professional growth

· Manage, develop, evaluate, and reward performance and contributions

· Guide staff to identify and establish strategic workplans in alignment with priorities and overall mission

· Encourage the use of protocols and systems
